Keeping Your Family Safe
Your driveway goes through a lot! Kids playing, thousands of pounds of metal driving over it every day, and wear and tear from weather make cracks and divots inevitable. So, how do you know whether to patch, resurface, or completely replace? It’s important to consider all three options based upon your budget, the extent of the damage, and the time you’re willing to spend when determining when to repave your driveway.
Patching
If your driveway is just starting to show signs of wear with only a few, shallow cracks, then just patching and filling the cracks in yourself with a do-it-yourself kit is a quick, budget-friendly option, however, to ensure that the repair is done safely and correctly, hiring a paving company is the better option. It is a short-term solution, though, and will eventually result in a bigger project. As far as aesthetics go, patching is not visually pleasing and interrupts the look of your driveway. It’s also important to fill in these cracks to keep from family and friends tripping or falling! This is a good choice when the damage is minimal, and you aren’t ready to repave your driveway completely.
Resurfacing
If you decide to repave your driveway totally, it can be a considerable cost to you. A middle ground between patching and totally repaving your driveway is resurfacing. It’s essentially just scraping off the top layer of your driveway off and repaving the base. Usually, when mild surface damage happens, the foundation is still sound and resurfacing is more than adequate to fix any issues. Repaving
Around year 20, your driveway is going to be in need of a complete repaving. At this point in the lifespan of your driveway, the weather and heavy usage will have taken a heavy toll on the foundation of your driveway. Patching at this point is not wise, as new issues will arise quicker than you can fix them, and you will end up paying more in the long run. Attempting to just resurface may cause issues with your foundation, that can cause extreme cracking and dangerous situations later on.
